ACADEMIC CONFERENCE BETWEEN TRAUMA AND TRIUMPH: 150 YEARS SINCE THE BIRTH OF WINSTON CHURCHILL (29-30 NOVEMBER 2024 SOFIA UNIVERSITY “ST. KLIMENT OHRIDSKI”)

The occasion for organising an academic conference on Winston Churchill is an important date: 30 November 2024 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of the prominent British politician. We would like to use this opportunity to initiate an in-depth discussion about Churchill’s place in history in order to examine and reevaluate his historical role. Our priority in this interdisciplinary discussion is to bring together scholars from various fields in the Humanities with a shared interest in this subject.
This interdisciplinary approach is reflected in the thematic areas of the conference, which presenters can use as guidelines for their papers. Our proposed areas include:
1. Churchill as an author
2. Churchill and the Balkans
3. Representations of Churchill in culture, literature and art
4. Churchill and war
5. Churchill and international relations
6. Churchill and empire
7. Churchill’s personal life
These thematic areas are provisional, and the conference panels will not be necessarily organised around them. We also welcome papers on other topics related to Churchill and the historical circumstances accompanying his life and work.
Important dates:

31 October 2024 – submission of conference-based articles for publication. The formatting requirements will be sent to participants after 30 June, after application forms have been received.
29 – „30 November 2024 – “Between Trauma and Triumph: 150 Years since the Birth of Winston Churchill” Academic Conference, New Conference Hall, Rektorat (Main University Building), Sofia University. Most panels of the conference will be held in person at Sofia University, but we are planning options for online participation for presenters who are unable to travel to Sofia, especially if joining us from abroad. Please indicate on the application form whether you would be able to participate in person or online.
10 December 2024 – submission of final corrections on the articles to be published in peer-reviewed conference proceedings.
The working languages of the conference are Bulgarian and English.
